P186X Policies & Procedures

Code of Conduct/School Rules/Behavior Management Model

  • Students enter the building starting at 8:00 am.
  • All foods are to be eaten in the cafeteria.
  • Students will line up in an orderly manner before being allowed to transition to the next activity
  • During dismissal all students are to be accompanied by staff to their bus, once bus number is called.

Positive student behavior depends directly on:

  1. Effectiveness of the classroom instructional program
  2. Organization of classroom routine
  3. Behavior management programs

Planning, consistency, good judgement, and full implementation of our goal are important elements in this process.

A school is dependent upon a consistent instructional program in which routines and procedures are clearly defined and provide for the rights of the individual child and staff member. Creating a good strategy, being dependable, and clear thinking are key elements to an effective school environment.

P186X implements the schools positive behavior and instruction support system through 4 specific levels and points in the classroom. This is a multi-tiered behavioral system that associates privileges with achievements, rewards positive behaviors and incorporates a token rewards system. All staff will be trained in therapeutic crisis intervention for schools.

What NOT to bring to school

A serious academic environment is one without distractions. The following items not only contribute to disruptions in learning and social relationships but also may be lost or damaged, therefore they should not be brought to school:

  • Ipods, or electronic games or devices
  • Laser pointers
  • Firecrackers, poppers, weapons, illegal items etc.

Any student found with weapons, illegal items and explosive materials are subject to disciplinary action.

Please do not allow your child to bring any articles of value to school. We are not responsible for items that are stolen, lost, misplaced or broken.

Homework

Homework has always been recognized as an important medium to foster the academic achievement of students and extend school activities into the home and community. Homework assignments are given on a daily basis.

Report Cards

Report cards are designed to coordinate with your child’s Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.). Report cards will keep you aware of your child’s progress and needs. The areas covered are your child’s social growth and academic progress. Report cards will become a part of your child’s school record.

School Meals

It is possible for all students to have breakfast and lunch in school every day. School meals are free for all District 75 students.

Medication Policy

During school hours, students may have their medication given to them by the school nurse. However, their Medication Administration Record (504 Form) (2018-2019), must be filled out and signed by the doctor and parent. All medication must be in appropriate containers and properly labeled by the pharmacy or physician and the dosage schedule.

Please make sure that you renew your child’s prescription before it runs out.

Immunization Requirements

The New York State Department of Education and the Board of Health requires that documentation be secured proving that all children who come to school are fully immunized. We are required to exclude children not immunized and do not have documentation from a physician indicating this is the case.

If your child becomes sick in school…

The school will contact you immediately. It is your responsibility to come to school and pick up your child. If you are unavailable, the person listed on the emergency blue card will be contacted.

Emergency Drills

Evacuation, soft lock down and shelter in drills are held periodically throughout the school year to ensure that our students and staff are familiar with the procedures in case of an emergency. Twelve in total must completed for the year.

Inclement Weather/Storm Day Procedures

In the event of emergency conditions, such as weather emergencies or school wide emergencies, please tune in to local radio and television stations, the NYC DOE website or call 311 to get information.

Attendance

It is extremely important that your child attends school. If possible, please schedule appointments after school hours or during school holidays.

If your child is ill, please let the school know. If your child becomes ill at school, you, or the person(s) designated on the emergency blue card, will be contacted.

If your child will be out for three (3) days or more, please inform both the school and the bus driver. This will ensure that there is no disruption of bus service.

Parents will be notified in writing about half-days and holidays. The calendar included in this handbook also lists the days the school is closed.

Student Sign In & Out Procedures

Students not arriving on the school bus must be signed in by the individual dropping them off. Students cannot be dropped off before 8am as there is no supervision available. Sometimes it is necessary for a family member to pick up a child at school before dismissal. Please try to let your child’s teacher know in advance if you are planning to pick him/her up early. No child will be released without a valid signature. Children will only be released to individuals listed on the Emergency Blue Card. Students arriving late on public transportation should report to the main office for a late pass. Parents are always expected to report to the main office and NOT the classroom in all instances. For the safety of ALL students we need to announce visitors to all rooms/offices.
